The Sudarshan Setu holds the title of India's longest cable-stayed bridge, stretching an impressive 2.32 kilometers (1.44 miles) across the Gulf of Khambhat.
The bridge connects the mainland town of Okha with the sacred island of Beyt Dwarka, a prominent pilgrimage site for Hindus, especially devotees of Lord Krishna.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project in October 2017 and inaugurated the completed bridge on February 25, 2024.
The construction of the Sudarshan Setu came at a cost of ₹978 crore (approximately $120 million), signifying a significant investment in enhancing infrastructure and religious tourism in the region.
The bridge boasts four lanes for vehicular traffic, allowing for smooth and efficient movement. Additionally, it features expansive 2.5-meter-wide footpaths on both sides, catering to pedestrians and pilgrims.
In a sustainable touch, the bridge incorporates solar panels on the upper sections of its footpaths, generating a remarkable one megawatt of electricity, contributing to its eco-friendly operation
The name "Sudarshan Setu" translates to "bridge of the discus," referencing the legendary Sudarshana Chakra, the discus weapon of Lord Krishna.
The Sudarshan Setu is expected to revolutionize connectivity in the region, significantly reducing travel time between Okha and Beyt Dwarka.
