Skywatchers in North America are in for a treat on April 8, 2024, as a total solar eclipse casts its shadow across the continent. Unfortunately, for those in India, this astronomical event will be a distant spectacle.
The Path of Totality Solar Eclipse 2024
The eclipse, where the moon completely covers the sun, will begin its journey over the South Pacific Ocean. The first point of contact with North American land will be Mexico’s Pacific coast at approximately 11:07 AM PDT (11:37 PM IST).
From there, the shadow will travel across various US states, including Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, and many more. Some parts of Canada will also experience the eclipse, including regions like Southern Ontario and Quebec. The phenomenon will finally exit over the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland at around 5:16 PM NDT (1:16 AM IST).
Witnessing the Eclipse Virtually
Despite the geographical limitations, Indian astronomy enthusiasts can still be part of the excitement. A live stream of the eclipse will be available starting at 10:30 PM IST. This virtual window offers a unique opportunity to witness this celestial event, even if you can’t experience it firsthand.
Move Over, Food Myths!
While a solar eclipse is a spectacular sight, some myths surround it, particularly concerning food. Let’s debunk a few common ones:
Myth 1: Fasting During the Eclipse
There’s no need to skip meals during a solar eclipse! Clinical nutritionist Rupali Datta advises enjoying light meals as usual.
Myth 2: Throwing Away Food After the Eclipse
There’s no scientific evidence to support food contamination during an eclipse. NASA assures us that any radiation present would also affect stored food and crops. Discarding food is unnecessary unless accidentally spoiled during the eclipse itself.
Myth 3: Dietary Restrictions During the Eclipse
Nutritionist Shilpa Arora suggests focusing on relaxation and self-care during an eclipse, not restrictive diets. Light meals and fluids can help you feel your best while enjoying this celestial event.
