In a tragic turn of events, 19-year-old Shreyas Reddy Benigeri, an Indian-origin student in Ohio, United States, was found dead. This marks the third such incident involving Indian-origin students in the US recently. Shreyas was pursuing a graduate degree in Business Statistics from Lindner School of Business, University of Cincinnati.
Originally from India, Shreyas had graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, before moving to the US for further studies. The Consulate General of India in New York revealed that Shreyas holds an American passport and has Overseas Citizenship of India.
The Lindner School of Business student was found deceased on Woodside Drive in Ohio. The authorities have stated that no foul play is suspected in his death. Shreyas’s family, who reside in India, has been informed, and they are expected to arrive in Ohio soon. The Consulate General of India is offering support and assistance to the grieving family during this difficult time.
This unfortunate incident follows the recent deaths of other Indian-origin students in the US. Neel Acharya, pursuing a double major at Purdue University in Indiana, was found dead, and Vivek Saini faced a fatal attack by a drug addict in Lithonia city, Georgia. Additionally, Akul B Dhawan, an 18-year-old Indian-American student, was found dead near the University of Illinois.
Shreyas Reddy Benigeri’s death, the fourth such incident this year, has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of Indian students studying abroad. The Consulate General of India assured that a police investigation is underway, and they are closely monitoring the situation.
Shreyas’s father, who has received a visa from Hyderabad, is expected to reach the US on Saturday. The funeral is likely to be held on the same day. The Consulate General of India expressed deep sadness over Shreyas’s demise and continues to liaise with the family to provide any necessary assistance.
As the Indian community mourns the loss of another promising young life, questions about the safety and support systems for international students studying in the US are being raised. Authorities and educational institutions are urged to prioritize the well-being and security of students to prevent such tragic incidents in the future.
